Cybersecurity Vulnerability in Smart Grid Deployment Exacerbated by Lack of Clarity on Standards and Support from Regulators
The two UTC Smart Grid Policy Summit panels on the challenges of cybersecurity requirements and implementation brought out a disconnect between cybersecurity standards activities on a federal and state level as well as the problems faced by utilities in ensuring the security of their system. Right from the start, all panelists agreed that compliance with set standards did not equal to security because the standards in place were merely a baseline and only protected against known threats. The real concern for utilities, regulators and other industry players were the future unknown threats.
