Verizon Wireless won’t officially unveil their fourth quarter 2012 earnings until January 22, but Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam insisted that the company had its “best fourth quarter in the history of Verizon Wireless,” adding 2.1 million subscribers on the quarter. Speaking at a Citi conference in Las Vegas, McAdam praised SoftBank’s acquisition of Sprint, insisting that “is far better than two strong carriers and bunch of weak carriers that are having a hard time meeting their capital demands.”

In a Reuters interview McAdam also touched on T-Mobile’s recent announcement that they’d be eliminating handset subsidies this year entirely:

He said he is open to eliminating subsidies on mobile phones that sharply reduce the cost of devices to consumers, but said buyers now prefer paying less up front and paying higher service fees during a long-term wireless contract….”It’s very intriguing. Every carrier has thought about doing away with subsidies,” he said, but “I don’t think U.S. consumers are ready to buy an iPhone for $700.”

Granted T-Mobile’s plan involves also letting users pay $15 to $20 a month on top of a reduced wireless bill in order to pay off their device, something McAdam glosses over. T-Mobile’s killing subsidies because they’re a pesky market upstart; it’s unlikely that duopoly-powered Verizon Wireless intends to follow them any time soon.
read comment(s)

A hacker recently claimed that he had obtained the private data of some 3 million Verizon Wireless users, though Verizon Wireless has denied the claim in its entirety. Running what they claimed was an exclusive story last weekend, ZDNet stated that a hacker going by the name of @TibitXimer on Twitter had obtained the private information of some 300,000 Verizon Wireless customers. According to the hacker, he had posted just 10% of the records online (which I noticed at the time you had to pay to download) and would post more later. From the story:

The hacker, going by the name @TibitXimer on Twitter, told ZDNet earlier this evening that the hack was carried out earlier this year on July 12, which allowed him to gain root access to the server holding the customer data. Tibit gained access to a server with little difficulty after working with another hacker to identify the security flaw. Tibit downloaded more than 3 million customer entries from Verizon’s database, including names, addresses, mobile serial numbers, the opening date of each account, and account passwords. However, he said that figure was an estimate and had “no clue” exactly how many records there were, and that it was a “low estimate based on the size of one record and the size of all the files.”

The problem? Those who paid and looked at the data found that it was a smattering of FiOS user data that was leaked last summer, which Verizon previously acknowledged and warned customers about. Verizon had this to say about the hack that wasn’t:

The ZDNet story is inaccurate. This incident was reported to the authorities when we first learned of it months ago and an investigation was launched. Many of the details surrounding this incident are incorrect and exaggerated. No Verizon systems were breached, no root access was gained, and this incident impacted a fraction of the number of individuals being reported. We take any and all attempts to violate consumer and customer privacy and security very seriously, so we notified individuals who could potentially have been impacted and took immediate steps to safeguard their information and privacy. Verizon has also notified law enforcement of this recent report as a follow-up to the original case.

The hacker’s Twitter account and the files hosted on pastebin have since disappeared. “TibitXimer” apparently thought he could gain some nerd cred by laying claim to data that was many months old.

Verizon Wireless has created an entire new division called Precision Marketing to deal with the sale of this data. Fierce Wireless has an interesting conversation with Verizon Wireless’s Colson Hillier, who explores some of the new ways Verizon’s making money from your data — like keeping demographic stats on event attendees:

One vertical is a venue–like a sports stadium, a college campus or ski area. When we were testing this we partnered with a professional sports team to help them better understand their audience and figure out better ways that they could deliver value to their sponsors and their consumers. We looked at the clusters of demographic makeup for each of their events and found out interesting things about the types of consumers that attended their events–from what type of event, the time of day, their record and other environmental conditions that were occurring in their market.

You can imagine that governments and intelligent agencies will be first in line to buy data on who attends what events or political rallies. While there remains no serious consumer protection laws in place to protect consumers in this brave new frontier, Verizon is one of several companies promising that you can trust them to keep this data anonymous and secure:

We are definitely concerned about maintaining a trusted privacy relationship with consumers. We have a mantra that we use: transparency, choice and control for the consumer. In the case of aggregated and anonymous data, we treat that as an opt-out model for our consumers. We provide multiple forms of notification, electronically and through the mail. Customers can make privacy choices online and through our call centers. We take it very seriously.

Those promises might mean a little bit more if the nation’s phone companies hadn’t already shown they’re happy to help government break wiretap and surveillance laws at every turn. Meanwhile, it would be refreshing to someday see a carrier allow users to opt in to such tracking in exchange for a small monthly discount on their bill. Verizon’s privacy policy page has information on how to opt out if you’re interested.
read comment(s)

Verizon appears to have confirmed that the iPhone 5 will not support simultaneous voice and data use on their networks, though it will work on AT&T. Both Sprint and Verizon tell The Verge that simultaneous voice and data use won’t work for the iPhone 5 on their networks, despite the fact that this hasn’t been a problem with other LTE handsets&#46

Verizon’s older EVDO-based handsets also couldn’t do simultaneous voice/data, something AT&T used to have fun with in their marketing&#46 Those ads may return; iPhone 5 users on AT&T’s network will have no such limitations&#46

Verizon tells the New York Times the design limitation was an Apple design decision:

Brenda Raney, a Verizon Wireless spokeswoman, said it was Apple s decision to design the iPhone 5 so that customers could make voice calls and do Internet activity simultaneously only over Wi-Fi, not over Verizon s cell network. The iPhone 5 is designed to allow customers to make voice calls on the Verizon Wireless network and surf the Web on Wi-Fi, she said in an e-mail. It was an Apple decision.”

Though the story has popped up in several locations, Brian Klug and Andandtech is the only technology writer I’ve seen bother to explain why:

the iPhone 5 definitely doesn’t support either SVDO or SVLTE. It’s as simple as looking at the FCC documents and the appropriate sections in the allowed and tested simultaneous transmitters section for SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) testing. There, it’s spelled out that only one air interface can be active at a time, and that only one antenna can be selected for transmit at a time. There’s also an explicitly called out mention to VoLTE not being supported. I didn’t replicate the entire table of simultaneous transmission combinations which need to be tested (it is a huge table) there are no entries with CDMA Voice being active at the same time as any data mode save WiFi.

In short, with voice-over-LTE still not out of the oven, current Verizon LTE phones make calls over the older CDMA network. Apple didn’t want to make another variant with the extra internals and antennas (adding weight, size) needed allowing this to happen — so they didn’t. Most carriers expect to have voice over LTE service seriously deployed by the second half of 2013.
read comment(s)
